About the Class
Sarah Peterson teaches a popular technique of using wet-on-wet watercolor, or alla prima. It means “all at once” with this technique no layers are created. The result is a fresh and translucent feel. Create gorgeous paintings of an ethereal nature, of any subjects that capture your interest! Sarah’s individualized attention toward her students enables all levels of painters.
About the Instructor
Sarah grew up in Aspen, in the days of dirt streets and no movie stars. She attended C.U. for 2 years and then graduated from the Boulder Valley School of Nursing. She returned to Aspen and worked in the the Aspen Valley Hospital for a few years before delivering her first child there in 1976. She moved to Boulder in 1977, where she and her husband raised their 4 (now grown) children.
She has been a studio potter for 19 years and is well known for her signature trout majolica ceramics. However, her true love has always been watercolors, spending summers in Aspen at the Anderson Ranch under the tutelage of her mentor, Anstis B. Lundy. She has exhibited both her ceramics and watercolors in numerous shows in Boulder, Denver, Aspen, Ketchum, New York, Key West, and San Francisco.
Her paintings show a unique use of watercolor, expressing the delicate and ethereal qualities of her subjects in vivid contrast with darkness. Her use of white on white in combination with intense textures is beautiful. She says, “I look to the exquisiteness of peonies and magnolias and the rugged bravery of hollyhocks for confirmation that the Earth is still finding it in its

Notes
Start to look for ideas to paint, things that grab you, things that draw your attention, old ideas you have never acted on. If you see an advertisement, figure out what about it you like. Look at paintings by others and see what you like…(don’t be afraid to copy it.) We learn so much from looking at what someone else has done.
Collect photos, bring in fresh flowers, fruit, vegetables…. nice
things you are attracted to….vases, glass, pottery… anything…and or a painting to copy, something you love or hold dearly…weird objects… We can set up still life’s, we can focus intently on the specifics of something… it is all possible.
Please write with any questions, whatever they might be. I would love to be able to ease any fears or apprehension. I can’t wait to be together.
