about the class
Learn to create something new and wonderful from something discarded!
Inspired by the South African street artists that she met while living and teaching there, Therese Coats will show students how to fabricate art from surprisingly common and overlooked materials that often end up in the landfill. Producing chicken sculptures from plastic bags, designing flowers from soda bottles and assembling wire and tin can geckos are just a few of the fun projects that will spark the imagination, and allow students to create new works of art, including wearable art.
(The teacher’s inspiration for the class came from the street artists in South Africa where she lived and taught. She was impressed by their ingenious ability to create something new from what appeared to be nothing! We will draw on that South African inspiration by mimicking some of the most common materials and crafts. For example students will make chicken sculptures from plastic bags, soda bottle flowers, wire and tin can geckos. We will learn to save some of the most common items that end up in the landfill and create works of art and wearable art. These projects will spark the imagination and allow us to see things in a completely different light, opening our eyes to the potential of ordinary items as art supplies.)
