GALLERY MANAGER
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Art Base, a non-profit art center in Basalt, CO, fosters creative expression in the visual arts for all ages and abilities through education, exhibitions, and commercial opportunities for artists and artisans. The Art Base serves the Roaring Fork Valley, specifically the mid-valley and Basalt community, which includes several adjacent unincorporated areas in both Eagle and Pitkin counties, Garfield County, and the Roaring Fork School District. We take pride in providing educational opportunities and artmaking experiences, as well as providing an exhibition venue for artists.
The Gallery Manager position will implement all aspects of the Art Base’s gallery and small retail space in keeping with the organization’s strategic objectives and mission. This position supports the Art Base’s ability to support artists and host dynamic exhibitions. This individual will work with exhibiting artists to implement their vision in our gallery space. Additionally, the Gallery Manager pursues opportunities to extend the reach and reputation of the Art Base as a locally and regionally noted exhibition space. Successful candidates will be both results-driven and creative, as this role requires both programmatic and promotional support.
REQUIRED JOB FUNCTIONS:
Gallery Manager
- Serves as manager of the Art Base exhibition program, including facilitator of the volunteer Jury Panel.
- Manages the Call for Entries process via CAFE application platform.
- Acts as primary contact for exhibiting artists, galleries, visitors, and prospective buyers.
- Coordinate communication with artists from inception to completion of their exhibition, including studio visits when applicable.
- Orders materials for exhibitions (e.g., wall hangings, hardware).
- Collaborates with the bookkeeper to ensure timely payment of exhibition-related bills and invoices.
- Tracks and manages exhibition program spending and budgets.
- Oversees gallery openings, gallery tours, and moderates artist talks.
- Works with the Education Programs Manager and artists to develop:
- Interactive, community engagement spaces within exhibitions.
- Artist-led classes and workshops in the gallery.
- Manages all aspects of the annual 10×10 Name Unseen Exhibition and Silent Auction.\
- Co-organizes Teen exhibitions:
- Claudette Carter Art Mentors (CCAM)
- Laura Thorne Sculpture Mentors
- HOME / UN HOGAR
- Coordinates with mentors and mentees in collaboration with the Education Programs Manager.
Local’s Gallery & Shop Administration
- Oversees daily operations of the Shop and Shop Gallery in accordance with Art Base financial policies.
- Maintains retail visual merchandising standards and shop organization.
- Manages retail inventory and catalog using Shopify or a similar POS system; tracks orders and shipments.
- Coordinates artist commission payouts.
- Researches and proposes innovative products for the shop.
- Monitors and reports on sales, customer needs, and spending/budget trends.
Marketing and Communications Support
- Writes and edits artist materials (e.g., gallery brochure).
- Collaborates with Communications Coordinator to:
- Update the website with the current exhibition and shop information.
- Promote exhibitions and products via press releases, newsletters, social media, and printed materials.
Preparator Support
- Oversees the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions
- Coordinates the installation and deinstallation of volunteers and the hiring of skilled contractors.
Preferred Skills/Experience
- Experience in art gallery or arts retail management.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Familiarity with Shopify or similar POS systems.
- Familiarity with high-quality photography of exhibitions, artworks, and retail products for promotional use.
- Familiarity with Photoshop and Photo editing.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365
- Experience with social media content creation and marketing.
- Knowledge of exhibition installation and deinstallation procedures.
COMPENSATION:
This is a full-time 35-hour-a-week position with some weekends and evenings required.
The annual salary range for this 35-hour/week position is $46,800 – $48,125, commensurate with experience, plus a $500 monthly wellness stipend, and paid time off (PTO).
